Concept of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate


Hot rolled carbon steel plate is made from carbon steel continuous casting billets or initial rolled slabs as raw materials, which are heated to high temperatures (usually between 1,100°C and 1,250°C) in a furnace. It is then processed through roughing and finishing mills. After the final rolling, the hot rolled carbon steel plate is cooled by laminar flow and coiled by a coiling machine. Finally, it undergoes pickling to remove oxide scales and forms the hot rolled carbon steel plate.


Characteristics of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate


  • Lower cost: Due to its simple production process, hot rolled carbon steel plates are more economical.


  • Good plasticity: The high rolling temperature makes it similar to the forging process, giving it good plasticity and ease of forming.


  • Surface oxide scale: Due to the high temperature exposure during the hot rolling process, the surface often has oxide scales, which require subsequent treatment like pickling to remove the oxide layer.


  • Wide application: Hot rolled carbon steel plates are widely used in construction, machinery, automobiles, ships, pressure vessels, etc., especially in environments that require large mechanical loads and strong corrosion resistance.


Main Differences Between Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate and Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet


Production Process


  • Hot rolled carbon steel plate is processed under high temperature conditions (1,100°C to 1,250°C) using roughing and finishing mills. 


  • Cold rolled carbon steel sheet is processed at room temperature using recrystallization rolling technology, which provides higher surface finish and more precise thickness control.


Surface Quality


  • Hot rolled carbon steel plate typically has oxide scales on its surface and needs to be pickled. The surface is relatively rough.


  • Cold rolled carbon steel sheet has a smooth surface with high precision, making it suitable for products with higher aesthetic requirements.


Performance Differences


  • Hot rolled carbon steel plate has lower strength but offers better plasticity and toughness, making it suitable for applications requiring large thickness and high load-bearing capacity.


  • Cold rolled carbon steel sheet has higher strength and hardness but lower toughness, making it suitable for precision components and thin sheet processing.


Application Fields


  • Hot rolled carbon steel plate is widely used in areas that require high strength and toughness, such as construction, ships, automobiles, and pressure vessels.


  • Cold rolled carbon steel sheet is commonly used in the production of products with higher surface quality and dimensional requirements, such as household appliance casings, automobile bodies, and precision instruments.


Both hot rolled carbon steel plates and cold rolled carbon steel sheets have their unique advantages and suitable application scenarios. Hot rolled carbon steel plates, due to their lower production cost and better processability, are widely used in fields like construction, machinery, and pressure vessels. 


On the other hand, cold rolled carbon steel sheets are often used in precision processing, home appliance manufacturing, and the automotive industry due to their higher surface quality and strength. When making a choice, it is important to consider the required material properties, surface quality, and application field to determine which steel plate to use.
